FILMED IN BOULDER

One building, one exterior. The angular mid-century sanctuary at 950 28th Street in Boulder, then home to First Christian Church, plays the church where Warren Schmidt’s daughter gets married, standing in for a church the script places in Denver.

Everything behind those doors was shot roughly 550 miles away at Messiah Lutheran Church in Omaha, and the other Colorado shots were made inside Denver proper: the Winnebago on East Colfax Avenue by the Ogden Theatre and on the I-25 approach into the city. Boulder County supplied the face of the wedding church and, as far as the record shows, nothing else.

ABOUT

A newly retired Omaha insurance actuary discovers that his job had been holding most of his identity together, and a sudden loss at home takes away what little was left. He aims an oversized motor home west toward Denver, where his daughter is about to marry a waterbed salesman he cannot stomach, unloading his unedited thoughts along the way into letters to a six-year-old Tanzanian boy he sponsors for twenty-two dollars a month.
