FILMED IN BOULDER

Boulder County supplied two of the futuristic buildings in the film. I. M. Pei’s Mesa Laboratory at NCAR, perched on Table Mesa above south Boulder, doubles as the government medical complex. NCAR’s own archive dates the visits: Woody Allen walked the building on February 20, 1973, and cameras rolled there on May 8 and 10. Around a dozen NCAR staff were hired as extras, and the finished picture shows the lab’s circular drive, its main entrance, and Allen dangling from one of the concrete towers.

A second Boulder building appears as well: Charles Haertling’s barnacle-shaped Brenton House, the “Mushroom House” on Wonderland Hill Avenue in north Boulder, chosen to suggest what a home might look like in 2173. One correction worth making: the curved white house often called the “Sleeper House” is Charles Deaton’s Sculptured House on Genesee Mountain, which is in Jefferson County. Boulder County’s genuine contributions are NCAR and the Wonderland Hill house.

ABOUT

A mild-mannered Greenwich Village health-food store owner checks in for a routine ulcer operation in 1973, does not survive it, and is quietly wrapped in foil and frozen. Two hundred years later a cell of underground rebels thaws him out inside a sleek and cheerful police state, where the fact that he has no records and no legal existence makes him uniquely useful to them. What follows is a chase comedy of disguises, malfunctioning gadgets and pratfalls.
