FILMED IN BOULDER
Western Boulder County supplied many of this film’s scenes. Producer Martin Rackin told the Daily Camera he was planning “a greener, more refreshing type picture than the dusty original,” and in 1965 a cast of more than 100 arrived at the Caribou ranch near Nederland, part of which is now Caribou Ranch Open Space. The first clash with the Sioux was staged there, and the Blue Bird Mine bunkhouse plays the first stage stop.
Many coach scenes were shot on newly bulldozed roads at Silver Lake, in the City of Boulder’s closed watershed, with the Arapaho Peaks and Arapaho Glacier standing in for Monument Valley. Historian Silvia Pettem, drawing on the late Alan Cass’s notes, adds aerial shots over Fourth of July Canyon west of Eldora and the Ringo Kid’s pickup at North Boulder Falls.
But the stage stop’s interiors were a Hollywood set, and rain kept the planned stagecoach attack from being filmed in the county, so the company returned to Hollywood.
ABOUT
A stage pulls out for Cheyenne carrying a dance-hall girl and a hard-drinking doctor the town has run off, a meek whiskey salesman, a cardsharp, a banker with embezzled cash and an expectant cavalry wife. Before long the marshal riding up top has a prisoner too, the Ringo Kid, a wanted man out to settle accounts with his family’s killers. With Sioux raiders reported ahead and the cavalry escort turning back partway, the travelers must decide whether to press on together.
