FILMED IN BOULDER

The production’s Colorado unit worked on the University of Colorado Boulder campus in February 2007. Peter Cameron’s novel places its young biographer at the University of Kansas; in the film he is a University of Colorado graduate student before he leaves for South America.

Everything that gives the film its look (the crumbling estate, the grounds, the plains) was shot in Argentina, chiefly on ranches in the Punta Indio area roughly a hundred miles outside Buenos Aires, with further work in New York. Boulder County supplied the campus scenes at the end of the shoot. After nine weeks of filming in Argentina, the crew came to Boulder for the snow, and local extras filled the walking-to-class scenes on campus.

ABOUT

A graduate student who has staked his academic future on writing the authorized biography of a dead novelist learns that the writer’s surviving family has turned him down. Refusing to accept the answer by mail, he travels to their faded estate in South America to argue his case in person, and finds the widow, the mistress and the writer’s older brother each guarding a different version of the man.
