FILMED IN BOULDER

The story crosses the country, but the Daily Camera describes Dear Eleanor as primarily shot throughout Boulder County. Filming began on May 14, 2013, with interior scenes at a farmhouse on Colorado 66 just east of Lyons, and ran for several weeks. Some cast and crew returned in May 2014 for reshoots. Other scenes were shot in Denver and at a diner in Fort Lupton.

Niwot’s part is the best documented. Its historic downtown along 2nd Avenue played Manteca, California, the girls’ hometown, in the early 1960s. The Modesto Bee reported that almost every sign with Niwot’s name on it was temporarily changed to read Manteca, and that the old Niwot Tribune building became Manteca Furniture. In Longmont, a Times-Call photographer pictured director Kevin Connolly watching a monitor at Jesters Dinner Theatre on Main Street on June 10, 2013. The Daily Camera also lists Hygiene, Boulder and Nederland, though no site in Boulder or Nederland is named.

ABOUT

In October 1962, with the Cuban missile crisis unfolding, fifteen-year-old Ellie Potter of Manteca, California, is grieving her mother, who idolized Eleanor Roosevelt. When a letter arrives that seems to invite her to meet the former First Lady in New York, Ellie and her best friend Max slip away in her father’s blue convertible and head east. Her father sets off after them, and the girls collect some unlikely passengers along the way.
