Boulder County gave this film both its refuge and its ruined city. The high refuge where the survivors have held out is the historic mining town of Gold Hill, above Boulder, and the ruined city the characters descend into is Boulder itself, including the exterior of the old Boulder Community Health hospital, which the production captured shortly before the building came down. The outside of the lab where the film’s scientist once worked is the NSF NCAR Mesa Laboratory, filmed on October 14, 2022.

Director George Nolfi has said nearly all of the exteriors were shot in and around Boulder and Denver, though some signature sequences were staged outside the county, among them the chairlift sequence at Copper Mountain in Summit County and the mine tunnels at the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, in Clear Creek County.
