Gravel Main Street in Gold Hill running west past log buildings and a red wooden store toward forested hills

Indoor & Outdoor

Gold Hill is a lived-in 19th-century mining town about 10 miles northwest of Boulder, at roughly 8,300 feet. Its small grid of streets is almost all gravel, lined with log and wood-frame buildings, the oldest from 1872, and ringed by pine forest. Main Street holds the few businesses, including the Gold Hill General Store & Pub, in a false-front building the National Register of Historic Places dates to 1889.

Every road into town ends on gravel, and heavy snow can shut out vehicles without chains or four-wheel drive. Do not count on cell service.

Gold was found on Gold Run in January 1859; that March miners organized the first mining district in what is now Colorado. The Gold Hill Historic District joined the Register in 1989.

The streets are Boulder County roads. Filming on them needs an Events on County Roadways permit from the county’s Office of Special Events, applied for at least seven days ahead. Homes and businesses are private: interiors and porches need each owner’s agreement. Gold Hill is unincorporated; its Town Meeting has no formal authority over filming but is where to tell residents early.
