Boulder Canyon Drive (Colorado 119) climbs about 14 miles from the west edge of Boulder to Nederland, mostly on two lanes, beside Boulder Creek and, above Boulder Falls, Middle Boulder Creek. Rock walls popular with climbers rise close to the road, and a tunnel sits between Fourmile Canyon Drive and Magnolia Drive. Grades reach 10 percent with no runaway truck ramp, and rockslides have closed the road at times.

Filming that may significantly affect traffic needs a Colorado State Patrol special event permit, requested early; a State Trooper must conduct or supervise traffic direction. Roadside land mixes national forest, City of Boulder and private parcels; check each spot on the county property search. On City open space, commercial filming and photography need an OSMP commercial use permit (at least 14 days to review), filming also needs a City film permit, and drones are banned.

The 1953 Boulder Creek Bridge in the lower canyon, with arched concrete girders, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Boulder Falls, about 7.5 miles up on City open space, has been closed since a November 2024 rockslide, pending a planned City viewing platform.
