FILMED IN BOULDER
Mork & Mindy is set in Boulder but was filmed mostly at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. Boulder County’s part was small: the location footage that set the scene. A crew shot here in summer 1978, before the premiere, and returned in 1979 and October 1980. Boulder’s John McElveen worked as Robin Williams’s photo double and body double.
Producers spotted Mindy’s house, the 1883 McAllister House at 1619 Pine Street, in a Chamber of Commerce brochure; the owner allowed exterior filming, and it remains a private home. On the year-old Pearl Street Mall, the Boulder Book Store’s storefront stood in for McConnell’s Music Store, and in 1979 the crew filmed Mork and Mindy walking into the New York Delicatessen a few doors down. At CU Boulder’s Folsom Field, Williams and Pam Dawber stood on the south end zone goalposts for the shot that closed the opening credits of the last three seasons. The pair were also filmed driving a Jeep up Boulder Canyon.
ABOUT
Mork, a visitor from the planet Ork, is packed off to Earth to find out how people live, and his egg-shaped ship sets down outside Boulder. Mindy McConnell, who works in her father’s music store, learns what he is, keeps his secret and takes him in as her roommate. Each episode hands Mork another human puzzle, from friendship to love, and closes with his report to Orson, his boss back on Ork.
