On January 5, 2026, the Boulder Chamber announced that the Boulder County Film Commission had received official accreditation as a member of the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). AFCI’s Global Directory lists us under Film Commission Members.
What AFCI Does
AFCI is a nonprofit professional association for film commissions, established in 1975, with members ranging from city offices to national ones on six continents. It supports them through education, networking and advocacy. The announcement described its main goal as making it easier to shoot film and television on location, work that brings economic benefits to the communities that host it.
AFCI reserves its Film Commission membership for offices that have the formal endorsement of their region’s government, and the announcement noted that members must meet strict criteria for how they serve their film industry.
What It Changes for Boulder County
The announcement said membership will help us promote and market Boulder to filmmakers and production companies around the world, and called that especially important while Boulder was drawing attention ahead of the Sundance Film Festival‘s arrival in 2027. One practical piece is our directory listing: AFCI says location managers and studios use the directory to compare what regions offer.
Film Commissioner Bruce Borowsky said that as part of the Boulder Chamber and an accredited AFCI member, the Film Commission has a stronger platform for showing that Boulder County has the crew and support businesses, the scenic locations and the weather that film production needs. He also said filmmakers in the Boulder region have earned many national and international awards.
Boulder Chamber President and CEO John Tayer credited the leadership of Borowsky and Deputy Film Commissioner Tom Parkin with bringing Boulder’s film and digital creative community together with Boulder’s partner business support services. He named our Schmoozers, the Boulder Creative Directory and the Boulder Creative Expo as the catalyst for those connections, and said the support services the Film Commission provides to Boulder’s filmmakers and digital creatives are “the heart of its work.”
