Downtown Lyons

Downtown & Main Street / Historic & Period

Outdoor

Downtown Lyons is about a quarter mile of Main Street east of 5th Avenue, with High Street one block north. Buildings are one and two stories, several of rough-cut red Lyons sandstone; a red sandstone bluff closes the view west. Main Street carries westbound U.S. 36; eastbound uses Broadway, a block south.

High Street has the 1881 schoolhouse, now the Lyons Redstone Museum, and the 1894 Old Stone Church. Main Street has the sandstone McAllister Saloon (1881) and Turner-Stevens Building (1917). The 1885 depot on 5th Avenue is a county sheriff’s substation.

E. S. Lyon bought 160 acres in 1880 and formed a quarry company in 1881. Fifteen sandstone buildings in and around town joined the National Register in 1980.

The Town of Lyons requires a Special Event/Temporary Use Permit for organized activity using or affecting public streets, sidewalks or parks. Its form does not mention filming; confirm with Community Relations (303-823-6622 ext. 35, events@townoflyons.com). Applications cost $150 and are due 90 days ahead; late ones may be accepted for $100 more. Closing Main Street or Broadway also needs Colorado Department of Transportation approval. Arrange buildings with each owner.
