Downtown Nederland
Downtown & Main Street / Mining Town & Ghost Town / Shop & Retail Storefront
Outdoor
Nederland is a mountain town of about 1,500 people at roughly 8,230 feet, 17 miles west of Boulder up Boulder Canyon. First Street is its shopping street: painted one- and two-story storefronts, mostly wood, with boardwalks, power lines and forested hills.
Middle Boulder Creek runs alongside under a covered footbridge; Barker Reservoir begins at downtown’s east edge. Across the creek, the shopping center burned in October 2025 and awaits rebuilding. At the roundabout a block north, a 1923 steam shovel that worked at the Panama Canal stands behind the Nederland Mining Museum. In peak seasons Colorado 119 and 72 back up and parking is scarce.
The town was named in 1874, after a Dutch company bought the Caribou silver mine. A tungsten boom brought nearly 3,000 people by 1916.
The Town of Nederland manages the streets and publishes no film permit. Its Special Event and Public Assembly application covers events of 40 or more people; the Town’s page asks for it 30 days ahead, its code 60. Call Town Hall early (303-258-3266). The highways are state roads, the reservoir shoreline is City of Boulder land, and shops are private.
